An angel’s kiss in spring

Strawberries are among the most popular fruits in the world because their fragrantly sweet juiciness and their deep red color can brighten up both the taste and aesthetics of any meal or snack during the day.

strawberriesStrawberries nowadays are available year-round, but the natural peak of their season is from April through July when they are the most delicious and most abundant.

Strawberries not only do they taste great, they are also among the fruits and vegetables with the most health-promoting qualities.

Strawberries provide an outstanding variety of phytonutrients, including flavonols such as catechins. They are an excellent source of antioxidant-promoting vitamin C and manganese. They are also a very good source of heart-healthy folate, blood sugar-regulating dietary fiber and thryoid health-promoting iodine. Plus, strawberries are a good source of heart-healthy potassium, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and vitamin K.

Strawberries have grown wild for millennia in temperature regions throughout the world. While cultivation of strawberries doesn’t date back this far, it still dates back hundreds of years, but it wasn’t until the 18th century, however, when cultivation of strawberries began to be pursued in earnest.

In Greece, strawberries are largely cultivated in Ilia, Aitoloakarnania, Larissa, Pieria, Imathia, Florina and Pella.

Strawberries retain their maximum amount of nutrients and their maximum taste when they are enjoyed fresh and not prepared in a cooked recipe, so enjoy them like a Greek as a topping to your Greek yogurt or as a dessert after a meal, sprinkled with a little cognac.

How to select strawberries

  • As strawberries are very perishable, they should only be purchased a few days prior to use
  • Choose those that are firm, plump, free of mold, and which have a shiny, deep red color and attached green caps.
  • Since strawberries, once picked, do not ripen further, avoid those that are dull in color or have green or yellow patches since they are likely to be sour and of inferior quality.
  • Full ripe strawberries will not only have the peak flavor and texture, but will have more nutrients.
