Mavrotragano Hatzidakis 2009

Mavrotragano Hatzidaki is a label of red wine coming from Santorini, from the winery’s own vineyards. This product is particularly special because the Mavrotragano variety of grapes covers less than 2% of the Santorini vineyards.

mavrotragano_hatzidakiMavrotragano (black-mavro- and crispy-tragano) is an old, red variety of Santorini, the sole survivor from a distant past of exceptional grapes being cultivated on the island. Nearly extinct, it was dredged and essentially “resurrected” in the recent past from stumps of Mavrotragano vineyards, and today is systematically cultivated again in Santorini. It was traditionally used to improve the local wine variety of Vinsanto.

Hatzidakis’ Mavrotragano has an intense red color with bright hues combining red forest fruit aromas, bitter chocolate, tobacco and minerals. Loud and exuberant, it leaves a bold taste to the palate with a tannic character and a long aftertaste.

The Hatzidakis winery and vineyards are located within the classified zone of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Santorini, especially in the villages Pyrgos Kallistis, Megalochori, Emporio and Akrotiri. They cultivate a total of 10 hectares of vineyards, at an altitude from 70 up to 350 meters, with mainly South or Southeast orientation and in all of their vineyards they apply organic farming.

Hatzidakis’ Mavrotragano is an amazing red wine, served at 16-18 °C and matching nicely with red spicy meats, casseroles, as well as mature full fat cheeses.
